What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy has been widely used around the world for over 200 years. It is a natural system of energetic medicine which involves treating the individual with highly diluted substances, given mainly in tablet form, with the aim of helping the body heal itself. Based on each patient's specific symptoms, a Homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to each individual.

What is Homeopathic Medicine?

Homeopathic medicine (which homeopaths call remedies) mainly come from the animal, plant and mineral world. They are prepared by specialist pharmacies using a careful process of dilution and succussion (a specific form of vigorous shaking).

Like with like

Homeopathy is based on the principle that you can treat 'like with like'. That is to say that a substance which causes symptoms when taken in large doses, can be used in small amounts to treat those same symptoms. For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness, agitation and even palpitations, but when made into the homeopathic remedy Coffea it may be used to treat people with those symptoms. This concept is sometimes used in conventional medicine, for example, the stimulant Ritalin is used to treat patients with ADHD, or small doses of allergens such as pollen are sometimes used to de-sensitise allergic patients. However, one major difference with homeopathic medicines is that substances are used in ultra high dilutions, which makes them non-toxic.

Remedies can be taken orally in pill, powder, or drop form, or rubbed topically.

Who Can Take Homeopathic Medicine?

Everyone can use Homeopathy!

Homeopathy is completely safe. Even pregnant women and new born babies can use Homeopathy without the danger of side effects. People of all other ages including children and the elderly can also take Homeopathic remedies.

Can Homeopathic Medicine be taken with Drugs?

Homeopathic remedies can be taken alongside prescribed medicine from your Doctor and supplements as Homeopathy does not interfere with their beneficial action.

As your condition improves, you may be able to safely reduce your conventional medication, thereby avoiding the unwanted effects that sometimes accompany the long-term use of drugs. This must always be done with the consent and consultation of your GP. Homeopathy may also be taken alongside prescribed medication to reduce the impact of the drugs side effects. For example, two studies suggest that homeopathy may help women with breast cancer to cope with menopause symptoms. Some studies have found that homeopathy may be able to reduce the burning and itching sensation that some women get after radiotherapy for breast cancer. But these clinical trials were very small and so we need further research to know whether homeopathy really has an effect.

What can homeopathy help?

Homeopathy treats the person rather than the named "disease" so potentially it can help patients with a wide range of conditions, both acute and chronic. Illnesses commonly seen by homeopaths in the clinic include recurrent infections (such as colds, tonsillitis, cystitis), skin conditions, menstrual and menopausal problems, chronic fatigue, migraine, and stress related symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia.

What can I expect when I visit a Homeopath?

Initial Consultation

At the initial consultation your Homeopath will usually spend between 1 to 2 hours, asking detailed questions about your current health, medical history and lifestyle. Some of the questions may seem out of the ordinary, for example, your Homeopath may want to know what your dreams are about. The important thing to remember with homeopathy is that it treats the individual in a holistic way, and so your homeopath is looking to understand how you experience your symptoms and how they affect your life, so that s/he can match you with the most appropriate medicine.

Follow Up Consultations

Subsequent consultations typically last 30 – 40 minutes and usually you will be required to discuss the changes that have occurred since taking the initial remedy, so that s/he can understand how you have responded to the prescription and what the next step of your treatment will be.

Is Homeopathy Scientifically Proven?

Although it is widely acknowledged that more research is needed, the balance of evidence so far suggests – without question that homeopathy can be a clinically effective and safe treatment option.
